Diets & Allergies Survey

DIETS & ALLERGIES

The Berlin 2023 Local Organizing Committee have asked us to provide a variety of information about the Final Leg team.  The collection of this information will help better inform the LOC about our personnel, travel movements, accommodation and meal requirements.

We can provide the majority of the information to the LOC without having to ask the team members any additional questions.  The question of dietary needs and allergies is an exception.

The LOC has asked us to report on individuals who may have tolerance issues to Gluten or Lactose, specific dietary needs such as Halal, Kosher, Vegan or Vegetarian and allergies to nuts, fish and shellfish.

There is a link to a form below which I would ask you to fill out as soon as possible.

If you experience none of the issues described above, completion of the form is optional - we'll simply report that you have no special requirements, tolerance issues or allergies.

If you do fit the description, please complete the form so that the LOC know what is required.  That of course doesn't necessarily mean that you will be provided with specific appropriate food types - it is the Final Leg after all.

Thanks

Scott

Commonly Asked Questions

There are a handful of common questions that pop up each Final Leg and I’d thought I’d take a moment to answer what may be rumbling around in your collective minds. I know when I participated in my first Final Leg, I had a bunch.

Can my spouse/significant other/friend/family member travel along the Final Leg Route?

The short answer to this question is NO, and here is why: we will have very little, if any real free time during our stay in Berlin, especially beginning June 14th, the first day of ceremonies. There frankly is no time to spend with anyone traveling along, or following the team.

Being selected as a Torch Runner on a Final Leg Team is an incredible honor, and one that only a very small percentage of LETR participants ever get to experience. We are on a very focused mission – a job if you will – to spread awareness for our athletes, the Games themselves, and our incredible LETR movement. You will be meeting new friends for a lifetime from all over the world, who you will really want to get to know and spend time with. If you have someone close to you traveling along, it understandably becomes a distraction and takes away from the experience and job you have been assigned to complete as a Torch Runner. I hope you all understand this reasoning.

Here is what my wife and I did on my first Final Leg as a runner in Austria. A few days before the Opening Ceremony, she traveled to Austria and did a little sightseeing on her own. The night of the Opening Ceremony, I met her outside the stadium just long enough to connect her with the family of an athlete, and the spouse of another Torch Runner. The next day, she (and other Torch Runner family members) were able to attend our Signature Fundraising event and cheer us on (we hope to be able to do the same in Berlin). I did not see her again until after my commitment to the team was completed. It worked out perfectly.

Can my spouse/significant other/friend/family member attend the recognition dinner on the final night?

Unfortunately, no, and for many of the reasons stated above. More importantly, the cost of the recognition dinner on our final night together is covered by the Local Organizing Committee in Berlin and is solely for the Final Leg Team.

Can I fly into Berlin early, or book a flight home on a later date?

Absolutely. As long as you and your program coordinate the travel and understand the cost of flights to and from Berlin. I personally recommend staying later if possible, for all the reasons stated above. We hopefully will be providing your flight parameters in the coming days. We are waiting for a couple of loose ends to be tied up by the Local Organizing Committee in Berlin before we give the OK to start booking flights.

Can I wear leggings/tights under my running shorts?

No. For the purposes of media coverage, and our own social media platforms it is imperative that we have a sense of uniformity. If some individuals were to wear leggings/tights and others did not, it is not the clean look we are trying to achieve. Now, if you are like me, chafing can be an issue, especially when we run multiple segments during the course of a day. If you too share that issue, we strongly recommend wearing compression shorts that fit under your team running shorts. I have experienced 100% success using this option.

Do I really need to be prepared to run at a 10-minute-per-mile pace?

This is a 100% yes, and for a couple of reasons. While our typical pace is comfortable for nearly everyone, we have to be prepared for the unexpected and I use Austria as an example. On the route I was assigned, we needed to start a ceremony a little early to accommodate the dignitaries in attendance. That required us to run at a much quicker pace than normal. I’m pleased to say that everyone on that particular route was able to maintain that pace.

As I’ve said before, I want everyone to enjoy every, single moment of our journey. If you’re sucking wind because you’re not physically prepared, you won’t be having fun. I would love if no one on this Final Leg Team needs to ride the “sag wagon” due to not being physically prepared (with the exception of an injury, which can understandably occur).

Live by the adage, “if you stay ready, you don’t have to get ready.”

Thanks to all of you for what you do, and please don’t hesitate to reach out with questions!

Getting all our ducks in a row

Getting all our ducks in a row

I'm sure that you've all heard the term 'getting our ducks in a row' before.  It means getting everything organised before an event.

My job on the Final Leg team is Logistics - and I am going to do my best to ensure that everything is in order well before the Final Leg starts in June.

An extremely important part of the preparations is getting all the necessary information from team members.  This includes names and contact details, emergency contacts, travel and passport information, biographies, uniform sizing and accreditation photos.

With just 133 days to go till you all arrive in Berlin, there are a lot of holes to fill.

Passport Details - 25 outstanding
Photographs - 6 outstanding
Biographies - 12 outstanding
Uniform sizes - 15 outstanding

I thank those of you who have taken the time to supply me with all that I have asked for.

I am not going to name and shame those who are yet to submit everything.  What I ask is that when you receive an email from me in the next day or so asking for this information that you respond promptly.

And there ends the rant!

Scott

Google Translate options

HOW TO READ THE BLOG POSTS IN A DIFFERENT LANGUAGE

It might come as a surprise to some of you, but there are 23 members of the Final Leg Team who do not speak English as their primary language.  That's over 20% of the team speaking one of 11 languages other than English.

The breakdown is as follows:

  • German (10)
  • Estonian (2)
  • Greek (2)
  • Mandarin Chinese (2)
  • Cantonese (1)
  • Czech (1)
  • Dutch (1)
  • Icelandic (1)
  • Italian (1)
  • Korean (1)
  • Latvian (1)

It is also the case that almost all of the 23 team members speak English as a second language.

In an effort to assist those team members, we have included a Google Translate button at the top of the page just under the Blog Header image.

No promises here about the strict accuracy of the translations, but we hope it might be easier for those team members to read the posts in their own language.

Hope this assists

Are you out there?

ARE YOU OUT THERE READING THIS?

We announced that we would be communicating and passing on relevant information about the Final Leg event through this Blog a week or so ago.  What we don't know is how many of you are accessing and reading the Blog Posts - not that there have been many published to date.

The purpose of this Blog Post is to identify who is on-line and who is not.  We'll then be able to reach out to those who haven't yet visited the site to gently prod them into doing so.

So - if you've already taken the time to read this far into this post - please do one more thing - click on the link below and fill in the survey - all we need is your Name, Role and Team and whether or not you like the Blog concept.

It will only take a minute to complete and it will save you getting a follow up email from your Team Leader.

Team Communication 3

Team Communication #3

Welcome to our inaugural blog post as a form of communication with the entire team. Scott Whyte, Greg Dawson, and I will be providing an ongoing stream of content, so it will be your responsibility to check back often for updates. I will, however, send an email advisement when a formal Team Communication is posted.

As I create this blog post, we are a mere 150 days from our first Torch Run in Berlin and 147 days from Torch Runners arriving in one of the world’s most historic cities. Although our time together is short, collectively we will laser focus our efforts on spreading awareness for our amazing athletes, the magnificent stage of a World Games, and of course our LETR movement which has raised nearly $1 billion!

Our days will be long, our sleep short, but our impact will be tremendous. I hope you are as excited as I am to embark on this incredible journey.

By now most of you (if not all) have been contacted by your Team Leaders, who will begin scheduling meetings with you to get acquainted, provide information, and help answer the million questions I’m sure each of you have. I know each of the Team Leaders quite well and think we have one of the strongest group of leaders we have ever had.

TEAMS

We would like to welcome Nicola Tromba from Italy, who replaces Donnatella Frantini, who unfortunately needed to withdraw.

Also, Dawn Ballas from Colorado needed to step away due to an unexpected death in the family. We are awaiting a replacement runner from Colorado and will introduce them to the group in the next communication.

 TORCH RUNNER SPEECHES

We will be asking two Torch Runners from each of the eight teams to speak at ceremonies. When you meet, please advise your Team Leader as soon as possible if you are interested in speaking. The parameters of the speech are simple: you have a maximum of two minutes to share with the world how you became involved in the LETR, and why it’s important to you. We will provide you with a deadline for your speech. What we hope to do is be able to provide you with your specific speaking location, however that is always subject to change. Once you submit your speech, it will be translated into German for presentation at the ceremony.

FUNDRAISING EVENT

We had hoped to announce our Signature Fundraising event in this communication, but the holidays have caused a slight delay. As soon as it is confirmed, we will share the news with all of you and begin setting up our fundraising platform.

FLIGHTS

We also hope to have everything finalized by our next communication so that we can begin booking flights. Again, as soon as that piece solidifies, we will let you know.

RUNNING

We hope that you are piling up the miles in physically preparing yourselves for our daily runs. Although the individual distances are not lengthy, the compounded runs can catch up to you. As has been stated before, you should be capable of sustaining a 10-minute mile for three miles.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to your Team Leaders with questions or concerns.
